Hot on the heels of last year's Le passage des glaciers, Norilsk are back with another album clocking in at just over 32 minutes. Once again, they offer some slow and crushing doom metal with mostly death metal vocals, though they veer into slightly more accessible territory here and there. In great Canadian fashion, they mix it up with English and French lyrics.

Norilsk play it slow and depressing, sometimes walking on the fence with funeral doom just to keep you on your toes. They've included a cover of French-Canadian signer Mylène Farmer's "Tomber 7 fois" (not available in the digital edition, making that one just over 27 minutes in length) that is a bit of a mind fuck: Even though it sets itself apart with a much more upbeat vibe than the rest of the album, the band's interpretation makes it fit relatively well here. I can't comment on this versus the original as I'm vaguely aware of Farmer's existence, but that's about it. ;)

Overall, I liked the previous album better than this one, but it nonetheless lends itself to repeated listens. Whether you like your doom depressing, relaxing, or both, Weepers of the Land is ready to serve.
