Less than a year after the release of their debut EP, Japetus, Norilsk signed with Hypnotic Dirge and already delivered their first full-length album. Two of the three EP tracks were kept for this debut album, together with 7 new titles, so The Idea of North offers us 9 tracks in its 55 minutes of playing time, 9 tracks mixing slow, tormenting Doom rhythms almost touching Funeral Doom territories with some more energetic '90's type Doom Death, and also some interesting Post Metal structures here and there to spice things up a little. I have to admit I found a couple of tracks quite boring, but as a general impression after spinning this a few times I'd say it's an interesting material defined mostly by repetitive (quite generic at times) guitar riffs, very nice guitar leads, comprehensive growling vocals supported at times by clean vocals and whispers, all sung in French (the band comes from Quebec), and a general Post atmosphere. The album comes in form of a digipak featuring a 12 pages booklet with lyrics in both French and English (good idea) and with an excellent artwork in perfect sync with the music.

Abbiamo già incrociato il duo canadese dei Norilsk, composto da Nicolas Miquelon (basso, chitarra e voce) e Nick Richer (batteria e seconda voce): nel 2014 fu il nostro Istrice a scrivere di "Japetus" e della loro Idea Del Nord, idea che — per chi non ne fosse a conoscenza — viene ben esposta dalla frase posta all'interno del digipak, una volta estratto il cd dalla custodia: «Remote is the north and long are the nights. Solitu...

Первая реакция публики на появление новой зарубежной doom-группы, названной в честь российского города, была смешанной, а где-то и откровенно смешной: подражают KYPCK, трепещут перед Россией... Умы школьников были не на шутку взбудоражены. Если гов...

Hailing from Quebec, this duo take their name from Siberia’s most desolate, northernmost city, and of course it’s home to a ….metal foundry. And while you’d expect doom considering the moniker and label, this isn’t the huge, lumbering, funeral doom, Evoken/Ahab sort of crawl the name and label imbue, as it’s much more varied.

These guys have more in common with blackened, sludge or stoner doom and more grooving death do...

While there’s something to be said about a good riff, a good riff by itself with no follow through is something of a wasted opportunity. That’s what The Idea of North is. Solid riffs, good drumming, heavy vocals, just played for eternity. They’re the sonic equivalent of that attractive person who catches your eye, but open further inspection you realize they’re not all there.

This Quebecois death/doom duo’s debut lacks the...

With their debut album ‘The Idea Of North’ Norilsk have thrown something of a curveball into the arena of death / doom metal, as while it’s certainly an accurate description of their music this is an album that’s quite unlike any other death / doom album I’ve heard up to now. What Norilsk do well here is take the genre to the more extreme end of the spectrum, coming at you with crushing heaviness and an atmosphere of st...

Taking their name from a remote Siberian city, home to a renowned heavy metal smelting complex, Canada's Norilsk have a name to live up to and with their latest offering, 'The Idea Of North', they offer up a chilling slice of doom that does the job with gusto.

Things get off to an ominous start with 'Japetus', a crunching riff interlaced with a piercing melodic line and vocals that reach a depth and grimness I've rarely heard. It's all...

“The Idea Of North”. Such an eclipsing title ought to command epic music and in this case it does! Canadian duo Norilsk are one of plenty healthy and upcoming formations out of Quebec, creating sordid musical landscapes that manifest towering grooves, epic melodies and desolate, sludgy passages in the space between.

The artwork alone captivates and sends me off to different worlds, while the nine tracks paint brutal themes of...
