Being huge fans of Gothic Death/Doom Metal, it is quite a treat when we get promos from bands like Lycanthia that keep the genre alive and give it a push with their excellent release. In “Oligarchy” the band delivers eight tracks of majestic Gothic Death/Doom Metal in the same vein of bands like Draconian, Ashes You Leave, old Theater Of Tragedy, The Sins of Thy Beloved, etc. With more than 50 minutes of music, this release is quite emotional and very well-crafted, the perfect addition to any fan of the genre collection.

Opening with the nine-minute epic “The Essential Components of Misery”, we are immediately hooked by Vanessa Black and Megan Tassaker (Avrigus) enchanting vocals. Vanessa also handles the violin in this release, and it greatly adds that depressive atmospheric vibe that it is intended for. Lee Tassaker’s growls are a perfect fit, and the powerful riffs are just the stuff Doom dreams are made of.

The band has an excellent ear for epic melodic passages, like the very dramatic ones on “Forgone”. They also use keyboards to perfection to greatly accentuate their lavish atmosphere. With heavier tracks like “Ablaze The Wheel Turns”, we couldn’t keep ourselves from headbanging almost immediately. Alternating tempos is one of the band’s musical skills in their arsenal allowing tracks like “Despondency in Crescendo” to greatly work when switching between potent riffs and awesome keyboard interludes.

“Time Feeds This Wound” is one of our favorite tracks thanks to the dramatic opening and very melancholic nature. “Hair Of The Beast” and “From Ancestral Lands” nicely reminded us of Tristania, back in their “Beyond The Veil” days… the good old days of Gothic Death/Doom indeed. There has to be something magical in the water down in Australia, a country that has produced excellent Death/Doom and Gothic Doom bands like Mournful Congregation, Avrigus, Chalice and Elegeion.

“Oligarchy” is definitely one of the best Gothic Death/Doom Metal releases we have received in quite a while. The band combines excellent vocal arrangements with epic atmospheric elements and a very solid foundation of riffs, bass guitar and tight drumming. If you are looking for something to keep you up at night while Draconian and Doom VS finally decided to release something new, be sure to pick up a copy of this release through Hypnotic Dirge Records.

As already the case with reviews on the little-known band is, probably it would be appropriate to start with what's actually going to be playing for style and some sauce on the history of the group. But do not be fooled, though, I said that Lycanthia is a famous group, certainly not some puppies, because these Aussies have pulled my cart since 1996, although the current "oligarch" is only their secon...

Founded in 1996, it was after the '99er debut album became quiet around the Gothic Doomer LYCANTHIA from Sydney: Until 2006, fans had to wait, and then got with "Within The Walls" only an EP offered. Now what about "Oligarchy" the second album by the Australians in the stores. What Australia's oldest active Doom band, how calls himself, delivers here is still a very solid mix of doomy elements such ...

This is a six piece that needs listening to. Hailing from Australia, Lycanthia have been producing music since 1996 making them both an enigma and a standout for the Australian metal scene, especially in the gothic doom genre. It wasn’t enough for the band to release a single stellar record; instead they did it again and again. It could be argued that this style of music has been done before, but never in such a convincing and al...

Oh, a gothic metal album with a female singer - how exciting! And then also a record cover, which somehow looks like cutscenes from computer games of the 90s. Has not already been said and done with Nightwish and countless high fluctuating epigones everything? You could definitely see that in Lycanthia it's just not so simple, because behind the visually appealing not just cover hides quite a good ...

Then Hypnotic Dirge Records again sent us a couple of albums to review, and then you never know quite what to expect. We know, however, that usually is music that requires some time to familiarize themselves in.

Lycanthia is from Australia and plays doom metal. It is not a new band, actually they have been around since 1997, but the "oligarchy" is still only their second album. My inspirations include downl...

Formed in 1996, Lycanthia carries with them a history spanning 17 years and are one of Australia's oldest surviving doom metal bands. A six piece band hailing from Sydney, Lycanthia play traditional gothic death-doom metal with a strong emphasis on atmosphere, melody, and the captivating use of alternating male growls (courtesy Lee Tassaker) and female soprano vocals from violinist and keyboardists Vanessa Black and Megan Tassaker....
