Today it is Doomicus Metallicus Mundus great pleasure and honour to interview Barre Gambling, Guitarist in Daylight Dies and Guitarist/Keyboardist in Atten Ash Band.

Doomicus Metallicus Mundus: Hello Barre, first of all please tell us about your first contact to music and how it affected you.
Barre Gambling: Hello, thanks for the interview. I’ve been around music since birth. My grandma is a jazz pianist – she still plays, 95 years old. My father is a guitarist and he tells me I would sit on his lap and hit the strings to hear the sounds as a baby. Musicians would come over to jam with my dad all the time when I was a kid, they played traditional old time and bluegrass music. I enjoyed all this but it wasn’t until I found heavy metal that the fire was set in my mind to get a guitar of my own and start playing.

Doomicus Metallicus Mundus: What was the first song you learned to play?
Barre Gambling: As a kid, my Grandma sat me down at the piano and showed me the first few notes of "Frère Jacques” - a children’s song. She asked me to figure out the rest by ear. It took some struggle but I finally did it and felt the magic of music under my control for the first time. When I first got a guitar at age 12 I figured out the first riff of ‘One’ (Metallica) by ear, as I was listening to the Justice album at the time.

Doomicus Metallicus Mundus: Which famous musicians/bands do you admire?
Barre Gambling: So many! The 90s Swedish death metal explosion was incredible to witness, many big bands came out of that as we all know, such as Opeth, Katatonia, Entombed, Dissection, At the Gates, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, and lesser known bands made a huge impact on me as well like Unanimated, Eucharist, A Canorous Quintet. The big 3 doom giants from the UK were very important as well: Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, and Anathema. I also admire Pink Floyd and the playing of David Gilmore, soundtracks by Antonio Badalamenti (Twin Peaks) and Danny Elfman. Also admirable is Krister Linder and a group he had named ‘Dive’ – amazing moody stuff.

Doomicus Metallicus Mundus: What are your fondest musical memories?
Barre Gambling: Opening for Emperor in New York City to a sold out crowd in 2006 has to top the list. I also have many memories of toiling with Daylight Dies in rehearsals, and finally getting all the parts to work seamlessly together for the first time, those are the greatest feelings for a songwriter.

Doomicus Metallicus Mundus: Were you influenced by old records & tapes? Which ones?
Barre Gambling: I was born in 1979 so all I had growing up were tapes and the occasional record. I happened to find in thrift stores tapes of Merciful Fate – Don’t Break the Oath, Celtic Frost – To Mega Therion, and a vinyl of the first Black Sabbath album. Obviously great finds!

Doomicus Metallicus Mundus: What are three sounds that you love?
Barre Gambling: A finely produced recording, my wife’s laugh, and the sound of opening a beer

Doomicus Metallicus Mundus: What is your favourite Daylight Dies/Atten Ash song?
Barre Gambling: Daylight Dies ‘All We Had’ has a special place for me. It was the first song we wrote for the Dismantling Devotion album. The opening and closing riffs make me smile everytime.

Doomicus Metallicus Mundus: Which upcoming albums are you looking forward to - metal or otherwise?
Barre Gambling: The new Sylosis album is sure to please. Katatonia and Swallow the Sun seem due for a new one, I always enjoy their releases.

Doomicus Metallicus Mundus: Fill us in on what's happening in your local metal scene in USA?
Barre Gambling: I currently live in Tampa, FL and its very deathmetal here. The big bands such as Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Morbid Angel, and Obituary play locally in the clubs on occasion, it’s always a good time. Smaller local bands are continuing the legacy of the sound. There isn’t much here for fans of melodic deathmetal or doom.

Doomicus Metallicus Mundus: What musical projects have you going on right now?
Barre Gambling: Atten Ash is my main focus at this time.

Doomicus Metallicus Mundus: Is there anything you would like to add?
Barre Gambling: Take care of each other, it’s a fucked up world.
